“I begin to feel the wish to be singled out; to be summoned, to be called away by one person who comes to find me, who is attracted towards me, who cannot keep himself from me, but comes to where I sit on my gilt chair, with my frock billowing round me like a flower. And withdrawing into an alcove, sitting alone on a balcony we talk together.”

I know how badly you just want to give up right now. I know. I get it. But don’t. You’ll be okay someday, and you will be so glad you didn’t give up.

For so long, all I wanted was for you to love me, to accept me. I thought it was my honor that I wanted. But really, I was just trying to please you.

high school musical 2 is a thiny veiled metaphor for white privilege. employment and education opportunities are handed to troy, a white boy, on a silver platter despite his own protests that “i don’t think i’m qualified”, solely because of a rich white girl’s interest in him. his friends, people of colour, are overlooked for similar opportunities despite having the same skill set as troy himself. when troy and gabriella break the country club staff rules, it is gabriella, a latina girl, who is punished for the breaches while troy receives nothing but a verbal scolding every time. in this essay i will-

can i pls just add that this is decidedly not a drag on hsm2. when troy’s relationships (with his friends & girlfriend) break down as a result of his privilege he reassesses the situation he’s been caught up in and decides that it has to stop (see: “Sharpay, i don’t like the way you’ve been treating my friends, and i don’t like the way I’ve been treating them either”)
the movie merely offers a critique on society and should not be thought of as promoting white privilege!!!! thanks for coming to my ted talk
